It was 10pm when I first time dialed Duan Xiaomei’s cellphone, at the time she was busy taking Dami to a pet hospital. Dami is a 19-year old cat. Dami’s eight brothers and sisters lived with Duan since the day they were born. But out of all nine siblings, Dami remains the only one alive.
第一次撥通段曉梅的電話時(shí)是晚上十點(diǎn)多，她正在寵物醫(yī)院陪“大咪”掛點(diǎn)滴。大咪是段姐自己養(yǎng)的貓，今年19歲，是最早跟在她身邊的九只貓中的一員，現(xiàn)在其余八只都已相繼離去。
For years now, the “granny cat” has suffered from renal failure making the pet hospital her second home. Beijing’s dropping temperature has once again brought Dami back to the vet.
這只相當(dāng)于人類90歲高齡的奶奶貓，臟器已經(jīng)開(kāi)始衰竭，于是點(diǎn)滴看病便和喝水吃飯一樣尋常。那晚北京剛下過(guò)場(chǎng)雪，天氣濕冷。像對(duì)氣候格外敏感的老人一樣，大咪也不可避免地被再次送進(jìn)了醫(yī)院。

Dami is one of three hundred “kids” that concern Duan on a daily basis. Out of love and sympathy, Duan established Beijing Fangzhou (Ark) Animal Rescue in 2006. Back then, she had a full-time job working in a government office. Even then, she would take the daily trip from Beijing’s downtown core to its countryside to take care of her animals. After her retirement, Duan sold most of her Beijing property and settled down in her new countryside home for herself and her beloved animals.
讓她操心的當(dāng)然遠(yuǎn)不止大咪一個(gè)，還有三百多只狗兒貓女。和許多動(dòng)物救助者一樣，單純因?yàn)閷?duì)動(dòng)物的喜愛(ài)，段曉梅在2006年創(chuàng)立了北京方舟關(guān)愛(ài)動(dòng)物基地。那時(shí)她還尚未從國(guó)家機(jī)關(guān)退休，每天上班下班，城里城外兩頭跑。后來(lái)退了休，她便把家安在基地，把城里能賣的賣掉，加上多年積蓄，買下了一塊城外的地，算是給幾百口貓狗們和自己都安了新家。
“I didn’t sell my car. Delivering dogs’ food, taking cats to the vet…I do count on the old fellow (car),” Duan called her car her only luxury.
“車我沒(méi)賣。給他們看病拉糧，都得靠它呢！”段姐這樣評(píng)價(jià)自己唯一的“奢侈品”。
When we officially met each other in the following afternoon, Duan was cleaning the doghouses.
隔天中午見(jiàn)到段姐時(shí)她剛清理完犬舍的積雪，在飯桌上就著酸辣湯吃了兩碗飯。
Distinguished from average animal activists, Duan was not into hijacking dog boxes or searching for abandoned cats, at least not any more.
和當(dāng)下的很多動(dòng)保者不同，段姐已不再一腔熱血地劫運(yùn)狗車，或漫山遍野地尋找流浪貓，而是全身心致力于為保護(hù)動(dòng)物立法。
“Legislation is what matters the most. Let animals be protected by law instead of people, that is what I’ve spent years fighting for,” said Duan.
“讓法律，而非僅僅是動(dòng)保者，來(lái)保護(hù)動(dòng)物的生命和權(quán)益，是我?jiàn)^斗這些年的終極目標(biāo)?！?/p>
“Many people made huge efforts in trying to save animals but failed to take good care of them.” Avoiding secondary damages was another reason that stopped Duan from being too hot-blooded.
除此之外，避免對(duì)動(dòng)物的“二次傷害”，也是她令不再”熱血“的又一原因。
“Lack of responsibility on some level comes from bad hygiene condition, limited space and food, sick cats and dogs.”
“很多救助者費(fèi)盡心力救回貓狗，但安置所卻早已經(jīng)超負(fù)荷，動(dòng)物們風(fēng)餐露宿，衛(wèi)生條件惡劣，還不斷有更多的貓狗被帶回來(lái)……這是個(gè)惡性循環(huán)。”
There was a snowfall the night before I met Duan. But it didn’t seem to last as snow was melting away, wetting the yard’s bare ground as we stepped into Fangzhou Rescue. Kuankuan and Tyson, two gentle country dogs gave us a warm welcome.
頭天的積雪已經(jīng)開(kāi)始融化，基地門口變得濕漉漉。踩著泥水來(lái)迎接我們的是以“寬寬”，“泰森”為首的幾只小土狗，舉止溫順粘人。
“I named every single one of them.” It seemed that Duan could remember the 300 names with ease. “Some are based on their characteristics, while others might be named by the place where they were found. Like Kuankuan, he was saved at Kuangou.”
“名字都是我給他們起的，有的是按特征，有的是按獲救地點(diǎn)，比如寬寬就是在寬溝救的?！?段姐對(duì)每個(gè)名字如數(shù)家珍。

Zhuangzhuang (Strong) was one of the oldest dogs here. He’s been with Duan for more than 10 years, just like Dami the cat. Old Zhuangzhuang has been deaf for years. He paced quietly, and every now and then he would keep an eye on Duan just to double check if his master was calling out his name.
“壯壯”是這里的”元老“之一，和大咪一樣，在段姐身邊一待就是十幾年。年邁的他耳朵已經(jīng)聾了，總是安靜地在周圍踱步，時(shí)不時(shí)抬眼看看段姐，大概生怕錯(cuò)過(guò)了主人的揮手召喚。

Zhuangzhuang’s roommate, Waiwai, was also an aged lady. Though she looked quite cozy and comfortable napping on her old cushion, the granny dog’s tongue was numb due to severe epilepsy.
和壯壯同住的另一元老”歪歪“，當(dāng)年因?yàn)榘d癇而歪了嘴巴，使得半條舌頭常年耷拉在嘴外面，此刻在軟墊上昏昏欲睡。

Adopters come and go every month, taking away their new family members, most of which are young and healthy. I thought Waiwai and Zhuangzhuang were not welcomed among adopters because of illness and oldness, but Duan gave out her own explanation.
方舟基地每月都會(huì)有來(lái)自不同國(guó)家的領(lǐng)養(yǎng)人，我一度以為年老體衰是歪歪、壯壯被剩下的原因，答案卻并不盡然。
“I personally would like people to adopt the younger ones. It will be a brand new start for both the adopter and the animal,” said Duan. “Honestly I could not leave the aged ones to anyone else but myself. I’m glad this place could serve as a nursing home as well.”
“我希望他們把年輕的領(lǐng)走，對(duì)領(lǐng)養(yǎng)人和貓狗來(lái)說(shuō)都是全新的開(kāi)始?！倍谓氵@樣解釋，“老弱病殘給別人我也不放心，就留它們?cè)谶@兒養(yǎng)老了?！?/p>
It was lunch time, and all residents were getting excited. Every room accommodates two to four dogs based on their tempers, which means not all roommates get along with each other.
參觀犬舍時(shí)恰逢開(kāi)飯，狗狗們都傾巢而出，一派歡鬧。房間是按脾氣性格分配的，每間二到五只，能當(dāng)”室友“的都是互相“聊得來(lái)的”。
Ordinary dog food mixed with corn flour and sliced chicken is on the dogs’ daily menu, and the cook is in charge of cooking as well as feeding. The entire animal hospital only carries four people on staff, including Duan herself.
伙食是普通狗糧加玉米面和燉熟的雞頭，且從準(zhǔn)備到喂食都由一位師傅操辦。加上早上幫忙清掃的兩個(gè)人，偌大的基地也不過(guò)只有四個(gè)工作人員。
“My work here starts early in the morning and ends late at night. I can’t help myself taking but to care of all matters here.”
“每天基本從早干到晚。“段姐也坦言有些力不從心，”我這人就這樣，事事都得自己把關(guān)。“
The very central part of the rescue center was supposed to be another dog house, but a lack in funding turned it into a corn field.“In winter, the place costs even more. The heating fee takes up a big amount of our budget. So I have to leave it like this. ”Apparently Duan was not fond of this season.
基地的正中央是一片收割過(guò)的玉米地，因?yàn)樘鞖馇謇涠@得更加空曠。段姐說(shuō)本該在那里也蓋上犬舍，但無(wú)奈資金不足，只好暫時(shí)擱置?！倍扉_(kāi)銷大，光燒煤取暖就五六萬(wàn)，只能先等等了……”
After lunch, the whole place returned to its original tranquility. Duan went back to her own room to get a can of tuna for Dami, who just finished her nap. Duan looked reassuring as Dami slowly started eating.
午餐時(shí)間結(jié)束，犬舍的喧囂逐漸褪去，多數(shù)貓咪也照例還在酣睡。整個(gè)基地靜下來(lái)，享受落日前片刻的安寧。段姐回屋給大病初愈的大咪新開(kāi)了盒罐頭加餐，看到她開(kāi)始小口吞咽不禁滿臉欣慰。

“She has been with me for 19 years. She is my daughter,”said Duan.
“It’s a tough winter for her and Waiwai. And I don’t think they can get through it,” Duan sighed. “The only thing good might be, I mean if it really happens, there will be room for more poor dogs and cats. ”
“I keep telling myself that to make the whole thing a little easier to accept.”
“她陪了我19年，像我親閨女一樣?！?大咪嚼得很慢，不知是因?yàn)樯狭四昙o(jì)牙齒不好，還是因?yàn)樗苍谀?tīng)著段姐的念叨。
“這個(gè)冬天，她夠嗆能挺過(guò)去，歪歪也是。它們?nèi)羰亲吡?，就有位置騰出來(lái)給新的流浪貓狗?！?/p>
“這樣想多少能好受點(diǎn)吧。”
