Morning folks! Welcome to 霸霸新聞早讀 where we learn English and read the news together! I’m 8P and today we will look at a major announcement from one of America’s most successful companies: Amazon. This week the online giant unveiled plans for a new approach to brick and mortar supermarkets, called Amazon Go. They aim to change the way customers pay for their groceries. While retail stores have long tried to improve the checkout process, Amazon’s goal is much more ambitious: customers won’t need to checkout at all!
來自Wired.com的報(bào)道
Amazon took the wraps off Amazon Go, a real-world grocery store that comes with a twist: there’s no checkout process. You just grab the stuff you want and walk out; the order posts to your Amazon account afterwards... Amazon seems emphatically not to want to share details. It steeps its description of how the system works in buzzwords: computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning. It uses sensors throughout the store and artificial intelligence to tell which direction customers are looking, even in a crowd, and can identify partially blocked labels. Beyond that, details are hazy.

Grocery shoppers often put things back in the wrong aisle. Certain food, like vegetables, are priced by weight. Families and other groups need to have one consolidated virtual cart, rather than being charged individually based on the smart phone in their pocket.
But the biggest advantage Amazon has in solving all of these problems? It runs the entire ecosystem.
For now, Brent Franson, CEO of Euclid Analytics, suggests you take the company’s word with a grain of salt. “If I were creating supermarkets from scratch, I would have done something like this,” Franson says. “I think this is the future of retail. I just expected, until we heard about this, that it was a little further out than it seems—or that Amazon is making it seem.”

Amazon has typically been associated with online shopping so for them to pursue a project like this shows an admirable ability to work outside-the-box. Customers should benefit with a more convenient shopping experience. At the same time, it’s clear that the technology required to make this possible will need to be very invasive, asking users to be tracked and linked to purchases more than ever before.

Nevertheless, by applying today’s latest technologies, innovative companies are finding ways to re-imagine some of society’s most common experiences. Amazon Go currently has one shop in Seattle but it is only open to Amazon employees for beta testing. This week’s announcement suggests doors will open to the public in early 2017.

What do you think? Will Amazon’s new take on an old model prove successful? Do you look forward to the day you can just walk in, grab what you need, and walk right back out (all without being arrested)? Let’s discuss it in the comments.
