一、引導(dǎo)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句，從句中的謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞應(yīng)用延續(xù)性動(dòng)詞或表示狀態(tài)的詞，如： While the discussion was still going on, George came in.當(dāng)討論還在進(jìn)行時(shí),喬治走了進(jìn)來(lái)。 Strike while the iron is hot.趁熱打鐵。 while、when 和 as 表“當(dāng)……的時(shí)候”的區(qū)別while 強(qiáng)調(diào)同時(shí)性或某時(shí)間段內(nèi)一種情況發(fā)生時(shí)另一種情況出現(xiàn)，與延續(xù)性動(dòng)詞連用。 when 可與延續(xù)或非延續(xù)性動(dòng)詞連用，在強(qiáng)調(diào)“當(dāng)時(shí)”，“這時(shí)”之意時(shí)when。 as 強(qiáng)調(diào)同時(shí)性，指“一邊……一邊……”一件事情發(fā)生，另一件事情立刻發(fā)生。 二、引導(dǎo)讓步狀語(yǔ)從句，多用于句首。意為“盡管，雖然”。例如： While I admit his good points ,I can see his bad.盡管我承認(rèn)他的長(zhǎng)處，但我也看到了他的不足。 While he loves his students，he is very strict with them.雖然他愛(ài)他的學(xué)生,可是他對(duì)他們很嚴(yán)格。 三、While作并列連詞用，意思為“而，然而”，表前后意義上的對(duì)比或轉(zhuǎn)折。例如： There’s plenty of rain in the southeast, while there's little in the northeast.東南部雨量充足,而西北部則很少下雨。 Some people waste food while others haven't enough.有些人浪費(fèi)糧食,然而有些人卻吃不飽。 while 與 but 的區(qū)別二者都有“而，然而”之意，但 while 強(qiáng)調(diào)二者的對(duì)比，而 but 強(qiáng)調(diào)前后的轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系。 四、引導(dǎo)條件狀語(yǔ)，意思是“只要”。例如： While there is a will, there is a way.有志者事竟成。 We can surely overcome these difficulties while we are closely united.只要我們緊密地團(tuán)結(jié)一致,一定能克服這些困難。 五、while從句中的省略。當(dāng)while從句中的主語(yǔ)與主句的主語(yǔ)一致，且含有be的某種形式時(shí)，從句中的主語(yǔ)連同be可同時(shí)省略。例如： While listening to the radio, she fell asleep.她在聽(tīng)收音機(jī)時(shí)睡著了。 While in London, he studied music and painting.在倫敦時(shí)，他學(xué)習(xí)音樂(lè)和繪畫。 六、while可用作名詞，意為“一會(huì)兒；一段時(shí)間”，作名詞用時(shí),主要用于短語(yǔ)中： after a while 過(guò)了一會(huì)兒I turned back after a while, but he kept walking. 我過(guò)了一會(huì)就往回走了，但他還接著走。 After a while I led the conversation around to her job. 過(guò)了一陣子，我把話題引到她的工作上。 all the while 一直，始終All the while the people at the next table watched me eat. 我吃東西的時(shí)候鄰桌的人一直在看我。 It's been constantly on my mind all the while. 我心里直嘀咕這件事。 a short/little while ago 剛才He went back for his coat a short while ago. 剛才他回去拿他的上衣了。 A short while ago, I attended the unveiling of the statue of Confucius. 剛才，我參加了孔子銅像的揭幕典禮。 once in a while 偶爾、間或He comes to our room for a chat every once in a while. 他偶爾來(lái)我們房中閑談。 Once in a while she phoned him. 她間或會(huì)給他打個(gè)電話。 wait/rest(for)a while 等/休息一會(huì)兒We are rather busy at the moment.
