Salute to Classic - Yesterday Once More
by The Carpenters
Yesterday Once More", written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis, is a hit song by The Carpenters from their 1973 album Now & Then.
The single version of the song peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart becoming their 5th number two hit and making them the act with the second most number two hits on the chart behind only Madonna. The song also peaked at number 1 on the easy listening chart, becoming their eighth number 1 on that chart in four years. It is The Carpenters' biggest-selling record worldwide and their best-selling single in the UK, peaking at number 2. Richard Carpenter admitted, on a Japanese documentary, that it was his favorite of all the songs that he had written. He has performed an instrumental version at concerts.
The Carpenters was an American vocal and instrumental duo of Karen (1950–1983) and Richard Carpenter (b. 1946). They were brother and sister, born 4 years apart. An interesting point is that their father, Harold, was actually born in Wuzhou, China. He moved to the U.S. via UK. The duo’s hits included Close to you, Superstar, We’ve just begun, Top of the World, Rainy Days Mondays, Yesterday Once More and more.
Close to You, Superstar, We’ve just begun, Top of the World, Rainy Days Mondays, Yesterday Once More 及其它的歌。
As their career took off, Richard became addicted to drugs and had to go into drug rehabilitation. Long a target of suspicion of having anorexia, Karen denied she had the eating disorder and pursued a solo album while Richard was in rehab. The effort turned out to be a flop and along the way, she turned down Off the Wall and Rock with you from Rod Temperton. Rod Temperton went on to become Michael Jackson’s collaborator later and Off the Wall and Rock with you became huge hits by Michael Jackson.
Rock with You。Rod Temperton 后來成為邁克爾杰克遜的合作者,Off the Wall 和Rock with You成為了邁克爾杰克遜的大作。
Karen died of heart failure due to anorexia in 1983. Her death increased the awareness of this eating disorder. Richard continues to make appearances in support of the Carpenters Center.
Yesterday Once More - The Carpenters(Lyrics)
When I was young
I'd listen to the radio
Waitin' for my favorite songs
When they played I'd sing along
It made me smile.
Those were such happy times
And not so long ago
How I wondered where they'd gone
But they're back again
Just like a long lost friend
All the songs I loved so well.
Every Sha-la-la-la
Every Wo-o-wo-o
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they're startin' to sing's
So fine.
When they get to the part
Where he's breakin' her heart
It can really make me cry
Just like before
It's yesterday once more.
Lookin' back on how it was
In years gone by
And the good times that I had
Makes today seem rather sad
So much has changed.
It was songs of love that
I would sing to then
And I'd memorize each word
Those old melodies
Still sound so good to me
As they melt the years away.
Every Sha-la-la-la
Every Wo-o-wo-o
Still shines
Every shing-a-ling-a-ling
That they're startin' to sing's
So fine.
All my best memories
Come back clearly to me
Some can even make me cry.
Just like before
It's yesterday once more.
